Year 1

Welcome

Year 1 is an exciting time for our children as they become more established and settled within our school. We continue to promote and foster the characteristics of effective learning through a blended approach of continuous provision, enhancements and directed teaching. This enables children to transition well from the Early Years, further their self-regulation and succeed.

We continue to teach reading daily through Read Write Inc. This scheme blends systematic phonics teaching with a reading programme carefully aligned to reading attainment. This approach equips our children with the fluency and prosody so vital for nurturing a lifelong love of reading.

Our English curriculum is structured through immersion into a succession of rich texts which demonstrate key linguistic and literary knowledge. We then create the platform to express this knowledge creatively in our writing.

In maths, we begin our ‘Power Maths’ adventure; embedding our knowledge of number to ten, classifying shape, and developing increased fluency working with number beyond ten, including when problem solving through use of the four operations.

In the wider curriculum, we further our appetite for learning through rich academic and cultural experience. We also aspire to ‘live’ our school values each day through our words, our actions; our compassion for each other and through the fact that, in year one, we strive to be the best we can be!
