Year 1 Newsletter 8th October

8 October 2015Year 1

Dear Parents,

Our focus this week has been on adding. The children have worked really hard on the skills involved in this, with many of them attempting independent challenges and adding mentally too! We have also had lots of fun learning a Harvest song for our Harvest Festival next week.

Literacy – We are very excited to be planning and writing our own ‘superfood’ story next week. Tesco have been very generous and invited all of the Year 1 children to pick their own fruit or vegetable in store. We would like to say a big thanks to them and we look forward to our ‘behind the scenes’ tour! We do require 2 parent helpers for each class for Thursday morning. If you can spare the time to walk with us to the store and back, please let us know.

Maths – We will be focusing on subtraction, again using a variety of strategies and fun activities to promote the children’s skills and extend their learning.

At home – A few ideas for you to try at home this week:

  • We have been learning new sounds in phonics this week (ay, ea, ie, ou).

You can find these in the children’s reading record books, along with previous sounds which they could practise too. Can they spot any of these new sounds in your shared bedtime story?

  • Count things around the house, e.g. How many socks when putting away washing? How many forks on the table? How many if your friend was coming over for tea?

 General Reminders –

  • Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school each day (shorts, T-shirt & plimsolls/trainers). We do not have enough spare kit at school.

Last week a letter was sent home regarding photos/videos of the children on our school website. If you would not like your child to be on the website then this needs to be returned to us. We do use the website to keep you up to date with the children’s learning, and the children love to look at their achievements too. Please keep checking for the latest news and pictures of all of the exciting things that we have been up to!

Have a good weekend!
