Year 1 Newsletter 28th January
We have had a wonderful week weighing all sorts of things! The children have used different types of scales in maths and have compared heavy and light objects. The children learnt lots of new facts and information about wild animals, including which group they belong to and what they eat. We will be completing our acrostic animal poems tomorrow. Please ensure your child has their wellies in school for Monday as we will be exploring the woods!
Literacy – Next week we will be writing their own short story, imagining themselves as a wild animal. We will be focussing on using capital letters and full stops correctly and setting out our writing using a story structure.
Maths – We will be focussing on odd and even numbers and will learn the rules to decide if a number is odd or even. We will also begin to double and half numbers up to 12. The children will have some fun challenges to complete over the week!
At home – A few ideas for you to try at home this week:
- Practise letter and number formation with your child. You could use paint, sand or water outside. We have started to join up some of our letters – maybe your child could show you?
- Share lots of exciting stories with your child. Talk about how stories often have interesting adjectives (describing words) and verbs (doing words). Can they find them?
Please remember to drop your child in the cloakroom outside their classroom in the morning. We are continuing to encourage independence, particularly with personal belongings and organising their own things.
Please bring in library books on a Tuesday so that they can be changed.
Have a relaxing weekend,
Mrs Bennett and Mrs Burkill
