Year 1 Newsletter 26th November

26 November 2015Year 1

Dear Parents,

The children have been busy this week with all things dragons! They have been describing different dragons in literacy and have thought hard to use interesting and exciting adjectives (describing words). We have also looked at fractions in maths with the children finding halves and quarters of shapes and also quantities. The children really enjoyed our walk around Seaton looking at different types of homes and their features. A big thank you to our parent helpers who joined us for the afternoon.

Literacy – Next week we will be continuing our focus on dragons and will begin to write our own descriptions of some exciting dragons. Our descriptions will then be made into a class book which we would love for you to come and read when we’ve finished.

Maths – We will be exploring our number bonds to 10 with a view to learning these off by heart. We will look at how subtraction and addition our related. Number bonds are a crucial part of children’s mathematical understanding. For example 10 + 0 = 10, 9 + 1 = 10, 8 + 2 = 10 and so on. If your child knows these then maths will be easier for them as they move up through the school.

At home – A few ideas for you to try at home this week:

  • Make playdough with your child and use it to make food that you can halve and quarter. This is a favourite playdough recipe of ours!
  • Ask your child to sing some of the songs from our Nativity play and show you their group dance.

Miss Mabin still needs a parent helper for our theatre trip to see Aladdin on Monday 7th December. We will be out from 12 until approximately 5pm. The cost of the ticket will be £12. Please speak to Miss Mabin if you’d like to join us.

Have an enjoyable weekend!

Miss Mabin and Mrs Burkill
