Year 1 Newsletter 1st October
Year 1 Newsletter – 1.10.15
This week the children have had lots of fun learning about different ways to measure using both standard units, such as centimetres, and non-standard units like cubes! We measured lots of things in the room and some delicious looking vegetables too! We also made a whole class height chart to see who was the tallest in each class, and found out that we range between 111cm and 132cm tall! In Literacy we had lots of fun reading our new superhero story ‘Supertato’ by Sue Hendra and thinking about our favourite parts. We are going to be using a story map of this book to help us with our whole class story.
Literacy – Next week we will continue looking at our story ‘Supertato’. We will use the story map to learn the sequence and begin to use the language used by the author. We will have a look at some of the vocabulary used in the story too, as there are lots of interesting verbs included. We will play some verb games to get used to using exciting words in our own work.
Maths – We will be focusing on teen numbers and addition next week. We will be practising how to write ‘teen’ numbers (with the 1 first!) and counting using both physical resources and number lines to find the total of two groups. We will work in pairs and as teams on different games and help each other to use different addition strategies.
At home – A few ideas for you to try at home this week:
- Spot numbers around you. Is it a one digit number or a teen number? How do you know?
- Now that children are more independent at lunchtime, we feel they would benefit from practising using a knife and fork correctly. You could chop up real food or malleable things such as playdough.
General Reminders –
- Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school each day (shorts, T-shirt & plimsolls/trainers). We do not have enough spare kit at school.
Today a letter was sent home regarding photos/videos of the children on our school website. If you would not like your child to be on the website then this needs to be returned to us. We do use the website to keep you up to date with the children’s learning, and the children love to look at their achievements too. Please keep checking for the latest news and pictures of all of the exciting things that we have been up to!
Wishing you a sunny weekend!
