Reception Newsletter 9th May 2019
Can you believe it’s only two weeks until half term already? We have all been very busy this week, despite the strange May weather limiting our outdoor use. The children have loved reading the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’; many of them had fond memories of this from pre-school.
Don’t forget, we have swimming on Mondays so please bring in your child’s kit.
This week we have been making our own short versions of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ story, thinking of the food that we like and adding it in. The children have been able to use their days of the week knowledge to help them with their story this week and have been very independent. We have also explored information books about butterflies and learnt some very interesting facts.
Next week, we will be exploring the parts of plants and trees, and then drawing our own scientific diagrams of flowers with labels. Some of us will also be able to add some information at the bottom.
This week we have explored the concept of ‘double’ and have been doubling quantities and objects in different contexts. The children have been challenged to record some doubles and some of them have been remembering how to record full number sentences.
Next week we will be learning how to count in twos. The children will be exploring counting in twos in lots of different ways. Counting in groups is great practise for Year 1.
In Phonics from now until the end of term, we will be selecting digraphs and tricky words that need practising the most and revisiting these with the children in a variety of ways. Reading lots at home will continue to support your child’s phonics progress.
Things you could try at home:
- Practise counting in 2s. If your child can do this already, try moving on to counting in 10s.
- Play some board games or build a story den together.
- Keep reading! Any practise now will be extremely beneficial to the rest of your child’s development.
