Reception Newsletter 9th January 2020
Welcome back to what we are sure is going to be a busy term! We hope you all had a lovely break and thank you again for your kind words and gifts at the end of term. The children were all excited to be back at school and had lots to tell us about their school holiday.
This week we have revisited some of our Phase 3 graphemes. We will be working our way back through all of the Phase 3 graphemes but at a quicker pace, and assessing how much the children can remember to make sure we include certain sounds in our Phase 4 planning. We will keep you informed of our Phase 4 planning and what we are covering each week once we start. Hopefully you have been reading your child’s school books over the holiday to ensure that they retain their phonic knowledge.
This week we have had a whole school focus on the school rules and behaviour management system. In Reception, we have looked more closely at what the school rules mean and then written down how we act to follow one of our rules.
Our school rules are: Be Kind, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Truthful and Be the Best You Can. It would be useful to reinforce these at home.
Next week we will be introducing the story of The Three Little Pigs and learning a story map (a pictorial representation of the story) to help us remember the events. The children will create a ‘word bank’ with pictures of key vocabulary needed for our story writing next week (words such as pig, little, sticks, bricks, house, wolf etc).
This week in Maths we have been using beanbags and hoops to explore number bonds to 5, and learning how to record our Maths in our own way. The children threw beanbags into hoops, then recorded their score as a picture. Some children had a go at writing numbers or number sentences too.
Next week in Maths we will continue to explore number bonds to 5, using a part whole model to represent this.
On Thursday 17th January, the school will be holding a Book Swap event in the school hall. You may bring books in from Monday and will be given a ticket for each one you donate. You can use these tickets to pick up some new books after school on Thursday.
On Tuesday 14th January, the school are lucky enough to have M&M Productions visiting to perform a musical of ‘Sleeping Beauty’. If you think your child might find the dressed up characters, volume of the show, or the dark hall difficult, please speak to us in advance so that we can prepare them, by showing them the setup or introducing them to the actors beforehand. Thank you.
Things to try at home this week
- Read your child’s school books with them 3x weekly at least as well as bedtime stories or other texts
- Try exploring number bonds to 5 together. These are simply numbers that add together to make 5, such as 2+3=5 and 4+1=5.
Dates for the Diary
Tuesday 14th January – Sleeping Beauty in school
Thursday 16th January – Book Swap in hall, from 3:15pm
February 17th – 21st – Half Term
Have a lovely weekend!
