8 November 2018Latest News Parent Year R

Dear Parents,

What a wet and windy week we have had! The children have been very sensible in this weather and have been keeping themselves busy improving their skills in many different ways. The children have all tried super hard with our first official handwriting session this week and are keen to get involved with writing challenges around our provision.

This week we have started learning our Phase 3 graphemes. We have learnt the sounds ‘v’, ‘w’, ‘x’ , ‘z’, ‘zz’ and tomorrow will be learning ‘j’. We have also learnt the tricky words ‘you’ and ‘me’.

Next week we will be learning the sounds ‘y’, ‘qu’, ‘ch’, ‘sh’ and ‘th’ and the tricky words ‘he’ and ‘she’.

If you are unsure of how to make some of the sounds we use in phonics, please take a look at this (old but useful) video: Phonics pronunciation

This week in Literacy we have been very creative! The children have been making their own fireworks pictures and writing labels for firework sounds, such as ‘pop’, ‘bang’ and ‘whistle’. The children have been really enthusiastic about this activity and are enjoying writing for a purpose. We are very impressed with their segmenting (sounding out words to spell) and efforts to form letters.

Next week in Literacy we will be focusing on supporting children’s writing in their play, which will include writing lists, registers, cards, labels and sentences.

This week in Maths we have been supporting children’s number recognition and counting within their play and through classroom songs and rhymes.

Next week our Maths focus will be to count and compare groups of objects and be able to say who has more/less and how we know. We will also try to work out one more/less than the amount we have, by adding or taking away 1.
