Reception Newsletter 8th June
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a busy first week back already and are excited about our final half term in Reception. We have got lots of fun things planned so keep checking our newsletters to keep up to date with what we are doing each week.
Tomorrow we will be acting out a whole school Seaton wedding in our local church. Children across the school have been selected as Bride, Groom, Bridesmaids etc. and all of the children are invited to dress up for the day in ‘Wedding Guest Attire’. Please can we ask that all children wear flat shoes as we have to walk to the church and then back to school. Children may bring school uniform in a named bag to change into after the wedding if they wish, but they do not have to.
On Friday 6th July we will be taking a class trip to ‘The World of Country Life’ in Exmouth. A letter has been sent home today with all of the details. Children cannot attend the trip without your permission and emergency contact details, so please ensure you return the letter by Friday 23rd June.
Our New Topic
Our topic this term is ‘Pirates and Under the Sea’. We will be doing lots of exciting work around pirates and what a pirate’s job would be like, making lots of pirate accessories, including some maps which we will use on a treasure hunt one day on Seaton beach. We will also be learning about what it’s like under the sea and which animals inhabit the environment there.
This week in Maths we have been testing out the capacity of different containers in the sand and water tray. We made predictions about which containers had the biggest capacity and how many scoops of sand or water it would take to fill them up. We then counted each one as it was filled and many of us were very shocked when the shorter, wide jug held more than the long thin tube! We learnt an important lesson that width is just as important as height. Next week we will be practising our subtraction, with the start number a teen number. Tricky stuff!
Please ensure that PE kits are in school from now on. We will be using them a lot to practise sports day activities on the field, so will also need suitable shoes, trainers if possible and plimsolls if not. Thank you.
Things to try at home
- Test out the capacity of different containers in the bath, sink, paddling pool or sandpit. Don’t forget to measure with the same scoop each time so that it’s a fair test!
- Try finding out more about pirates before we discuss it at school. You could visit the local library, use the internet to search for ideas (Swashbuckle on cbeebies is a good resource for this) or make up some pirate names together.
Have a lovely weekend!
