Reception Newsletter 7th June 2018

Reception Newsletter 7.6.18

Dear Parents,

We have had a great first week back. The children have settled in very easily and are really showing some mature skills and behaviour now that we are approaching the end of the year. We’re not done yet though, and have lots of exciting learning and a few trips ahead of us!

Upcoming Trips

We will be going to the beach and Jurassic park for the day on Friday 22nd June. We will also be visiting the marshes on Wednesday 4th of July (half a day for each class). We are in need of volunteers to help us on these days. You will need to be able to walk from the school to both of these places, stay for the day (or half a day) and then walk back. If you are able to help with these trips, please let one of us know. Thank you.

We will also be taking a trip to the World of Coutry Life in Exmouth on Friday 20th July. A separate letter will be sent out for this tomorrow with more details.

This week we have been revising our letters and sounds, as well as getting back into the swing of reading. We will continue working on this through the rest of the year, and may even introduce a couple of year 1 graphemes if we feel that they are ready.

This week we have been learning the days of the week by practising a song. We have worked in small groups to put them in order and had discussions about what special things happen on each day, such as swimming days, PE and clubs outside of school. We also discussed the weekend. The children have also enjoyed ordering different pictures for events that happen within a day, such as eating breakfast, having a bath and putting pyjamas on.

This week we have been researching sea creatures using books and the internet and have begun to write down our favourite facts for a whole class book. We will be continuing our work on this next week too, as we still have to prepare our illustrations and talk about the features of a non-fiction book.

Things you could try at home

  • Try finding some non-fiction books at home or in the local library. Talk with your child about the contents page and how to find the information you want. Share some facts together.
  • Do some testing on floating and sinking with objects around your home. You could do this in the bath, a washing up bowl or even a paddling pool on a hot day! Ask your child why they think it will float and discuss the outcomes.
