Reception Newsletter 7th February 2019

7 February 2019Latest News Parent Year R

Dear Parents,

We have had a wonderful week and been extremely busy making our own class fact books about bears. The children have also been enjoying weighing out ingredients for pretend porridge.

Parent Involvement Morning

We will be holding another Parent Involvement morning for you to join your child in their learning at school. This will be held on Friday 5th April from 9am until 11/11:30am. The theme is ‘Superheroes’ next term, so we encourage parents and children to dress up in something super! We will be sending out a response form with more information after the half term holiday.

This week in Phonics we continued our work on Phase 4 skills, this time looking at CCVC words, such as ‘snap’ and ‘brick’. We also practised writing the phase 2 words ‘the’ and ‘and’, which the children have picked up well.

Next week in Phonics we will be continuing Phase 4 work, this time looking at CCVCC words, such as ‘stand’ and ‘twist’. We will also practise writing the phase 3 tricky words ‘me’ and ‘my’.

This week we have been doing some non-fiction writing about Bears, linked to the story ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. We are creating a class fact book with facts and illustrations written and drawn by the children.  Some of the children have also made their own mini bear books to share with the class.

Next week in Literacy we will writing instructions, linked to the story ‘The Gingerbread Man’. We will be cooking gingerbread with the children on Monday and then using this to help us write part of the method for making gingerbread men. We will also have some gingerbread speech bubbles in our provision as an independent challenge.

This week in Maths we revisited length, measuring using a ruler and looking at how many centimetres long. We measured each other’s hands and feet to find out who has the longest.

Next week in Maths we will be looking at odd and even numbers and working out how to share out objects between two people. We will use numicon to help visually reinforce ‘odd’ and ‘even’ numbers too.

Things to try at home

  • Have a go at baking or decorating your own gingerbread men (you could even make some using paper or card).
  • Practise writing the anti-clockwise letters: c, d, a, g, q and s. We are really focusing on these at school at the moment and it would be helpful if these letters (and others!) could be practised at home.
