Reception Newsletter 6th December 2018

6 December 2018Latest News Parent Year R

Dear Parents,

What another busy week we have had! The children have been very excited to welcome Buddy Twinkle-Toes to the classrooms this week. He is a cheeky elf who has been up to all sorts of mischief. The children have all attempted to write a letter to Father Christmas because some tea was spilled on their original letters!

Nativity Costumes

Please bring in Nativity costumes as soon as possible. We are trying on costumes tomorrow. Thank you.

Parent Involvement

Don’t forget, we have Festive Parent Involvement morning coming up on Monday 10th December. Please come in wearing something festive (your child too!). If you have not yet returned your attendance slip, please do let us know if you are able to attend. We will be chasing you up tomorrow to find out if you can come.

This week we learnt the sounds ‘ear’, ‘oi’, ‘ow’, ‘ur’ and tomorrow we will be learning ‘air’. We have also learnt the tricky words ‘we’ and ‘are’. Next week we will be learning the sounds ‘er’ and ‘ure’ and the tricky words ‘her’ and ‘they’. Once these are taught, we will have finished introducing all of the Phase 3 sounds and tricky words.

If you are unsure of how to make some of the sounds we use in phonics, please take a look at this (old but useful) video: Phonics pronunciation

Next week in Maths we will be focusing on ordering numbers starting from 0. We will begin to introduce sequencing with missing numbers for some children, and use a number line to check what might come next. We will be focusing on the mathematical vocabulary ‘next’, ‘after’, ‘before’, ‘first’, ‘in between’, ‘bigger than’, ‘less than’, ‘more than’ etc to explain how they know which numbers are next.

Library Books

Please make sure you return your child’s library books to school on Mondays. We only visit on a Monday so this is the one opportunity to change it. We have many children who do not bring in their book and have outstanding loans from early October. If you are not sure what your child’s book is called, please let us know and we will try to find out.

Christmas Cards

We know that Christmas cards are a big tradition and appreciate that children like to give these out to their friends. Usually, it takes a large portion of the day to give out Christmas cards (as children are unable to read the names on them). We suggest only writing a class Christmas card, which we will celebrate at the front of the class. This saves you buying a lot of cards and saves the environment too!

Things to try at home this week

  • Discuss with your child which Christmas accessory or outfit they would like to wear on Christmas dinner day.
  • Practise writing some letters with your child. We have been working on our long ladder letters this week, which start at the top and go down. These are l, t, i, j, f and u.
