Reception Newsletter 2nd May 2019
What another busy week we have had in Reception! Swimming kicked off with a bang and all of the children were excited to try their best with their new swimming instructors. We will have swimming every Monday until further notice, but not next week as it is a bank holiday.
This week in Literacy we have been learning all about the life cycle of frogs and other frog facts, including those that live in the rainforest. The children have worked hard to create life cycle art and write their own facts down about frogs. They are doing this with lots more independence now that we are in the summer term and we are very proud of their progress.
Next week we will reading ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and writing our own version of the story, using our own ideas to change what food the caterpillar eats. We will also be learning about a butterflies life cycle and how they develop.
This week in Maths we have been learning the days of the week and ordering our own visual timetables of a normal day, trying to get things like ‘brush teeth’ and ‘eat lunch’ in the right place. The children were very confident when doing this.
Next week we will be exploring the concept of ‘double’ and will be doubling quantities and objects in different contexts. The children will be challenged to record some doubles as number sentences or using their own preferred method.
In Phonics from now until the end of term, we will be selecting digraphs and tricky words that need practising the most and revisiting these with the children in a variety of ways. Reading lots at home will continue to support your child’s phonics progress.
Things you could try at home:
- Talk to your child about doubles. What can you double in your home? (e.g. socks, forks, pillows, toys etc)
- Enjoy cooking something together or making a salad. Talk to your child about healthy and unhealthy food choices and what we do to keep healthy and fit.
