Reception Newsletter 28th November 2019

28 November 2019Latest News Parent Year R

Dear Parents,

The children have had another great week and been really engaged in our mini Arctic topic, learning lots about the wildlife there. We have been practicing our Nativity songs and dances in class and are looking forward to having a go on the stage next week.

Parent Involvement

Don’t forget, next Thursday is parent involvement morning at school from 9am – 11am. Please inform your child’s teacher if you or a family member can attend if you haven’t already. As it is a Christmas themed parent morning, we are encouraging children and adults to wear Christmas jumpers or accessories (such as a hat or reindeer antlers).

Nativity Costumes

The deadline for Nativity costumes is Monday 2nd December. We will be trying on costumes that day to see what is missing. Thank you.

Christmas Bazaar

Tomorrow evening is the Christmas Bazaar. Don’t forget your mince pies and craft competition entries if you have them. It is also the last chance to donate to our year group hamper to win us £50. We are very grateful for your generosity!

Phonics

This week we have introduced the Phase 3 sounds ai, ng, ee and tomorrow, our first trigraph igh. We also learnt the tricky words ‘was’ ‘you’ and ‘into’. Next week, we will be introducing the sounds oa, long oo, short oo and ar, as well as the tricky words ‘all’ and ‘they’.

Maths

This week in Maths, we have been talking about daily routines and using language such as ‘before’ ‘after’ etc. The children put a daily timetable in order and added their own ideas to make each one individual. We now encourage you to use lots of ‘before’ and ‘after’ sentences at home to reinforce this, for example “Before you eat your dinner, what do you need to do?” (Lay the table, wash hands etc)

Next week in Maths we will be having lots of short whole class sessions, focusing on number.

Literacy

This week in Literacy, we found out where the North Pole is, and then researched the Arctic and the animals that live there. We all worked hard to write a fact, and really enjoyed watching a BBC video clip on Arctic animals.

Next week in Literacy, we will be writing Christmas letters about what presents we might like and adding some Christmas wishes.

Things to try at home this week

  • Have a go at completing the Phase 2 ‘Home Learning Challenge’ sheet (in bags today).
  • It was ‘World Nursery Rhyme Week’ last week. Try introducing some new nursery rhymes to your child. Awareness of rhyming words is one of the developmental steps for children in Nursery and Reception.
