Dear Parents,

What a lovely week we have had learning the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and adding decorations to our role play Gingerbread House. Today we have begun to learn our Sign2Sing song, which we will perform together as a school on 14th February to raise money for their charity and help support people with hearing impairment.



This week we have been revising our Phase 3 graphemes and practising our blending and segmenting. We have also carried out Phonics checks on children’s recognition of graphemes and tricky words. We will use this information to inform our planning and have also given out tricky word ladders (today and tomorrow) to the children to take home and practise.

Next week in Phonics we will begin working on Phase 4 phonics. Phase 4 phonics builds on the children’s blending and segmenting skills with the graphemes they have previously learnt. Children will move on to CCVC words (C is consonant, V is vowel) such as ‘snap’ and ‘black’ and CVCC words, such as ‘tent’ and ‘paint’. We will also be revising the tricky words from Phase 2; no, go, I, to, the.



This week we have been writing part of the story for ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and drawing pictures to match. Soon we will be choosing examples of our Reception writing to add to our whole school writing display, which will be going up in the hall soon.

Next week we will be exploring the story of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’ and creating ‘Wanted’ posters for the troll under the bridge. We will be labelling our posters with descriptive words and writing some information about his crimes!


This week the children have really enjoyed exploring length and recording their findings. Children were confident at identifying longest and shortest and could easily measure with cubes. You could extend their learning by using rulers to measure things at home.

Things to try at home

  • Read your child’s Reading Challenge book with them and sign the sheet in the back of their Reading Record (Return these books on Wednesdays).
  • Practise your child’s Tricky Word Ladder every day.
