Reception Newsletter 23rd May 2019
The end of our first summer half term has come around very quickly! We have had a great sunny week and all of the children have been enjoying using the outdoors and doing lots of bug hunting.
Our first week back is our whole school ‘Take a Tale’ week, which means we will be having lots of fun all revolving around the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We will be having a dressing up day on Friday 7thJune. Children may dress up as a character from the story, or wear a prop. You can even be creative and come as a straw, stick or brick house! It’s open to interpretation.
This week in Literacy we have had an ‘Open Writing Challenge’ around ducklings and how to care for them. We have also had lots of other writing opportunities around in our provision and the children have really been enjoying how independent they can now be. Some children have even written their own stories this week!
When we return from the half term break, we will be having our ‘Take a Tale’ week and focusing on the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ as a school. Children will have another open writing challenge to rewrite the story or a favourite part, or even make up their own.
This week in Maths, we have learnt the names of 3D shapes and found out about their properties, for example, a cube, six faces, 8 corners etc. We have really enjoyed playing 3D shape bingo, identifying our bingo shapes by their properties and taking it in turns to describe them.
After the half term we will be focusing on word problems in Maths, for example “I have three cakes and I eat one. How many do I have left?” These will be tailored to the children’s individual stage of development in Maths and we will have a wide range of resources available to help the children work these problems out.
In Phonics from now until the end of term, we will be selecting digraphs and tricky words that need practising the most and revisiting these with the children in a variety of ways. Reading lots at home will continue to support your child’s phonics progress.
Sunglasses and suncream
Please could you discourage your child from bringing sunglasses into school. They are not allowed in school and a hat is a much better option for sun safety.
Suncream may be brought into school (please name) and your child will apply it themselves, with adult supervision. Please help them to practise applying it properly over the half term break. Thank you.
Things you could try at home:
- Enjoy our local area at this time of year. The wetlands/marshes are great for pond dipping and bug hunting and there are plenty of parks and the beach to visit too! The beach now has a litter picker, so you could talk to your child about caring for our planet.
- Please read your child’s school books with them so that we can give them a new set when they return.
- Try making a diary with your child with pictures and/or writing. It could say ‘Day 1 – I went to the beach’. Some children might need support with this but it would be lovely to have a bit of news to share when we get back.
