Reception Newsletter 1st February

6 February 2018Latest News Parent Year R

Dear Parents,

We have had a really lovely week practising our story map for ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and the children have once again impressed us with their writing attempts. We will video this for you and upload to our website soon.

Next week we will be exploring ‘The Gingerbread Man’ story, with a focus on speech. We will be thinking of different ‘cheeky’ phrases for the Gingerbread Man to say and writing some of our ideas in speech bubbles. We will also do a little bit of class roleplay with the Gingerbread Man’s character.

This week we have been using sets of balance scales (without numbers) to compare one object’s weight to the other. We have decided which objects are heaviest and lightest (we can tell this by looking at what happens to the balance buckets) and we recorded this on sheets with diagrams.

Next week we are looking at number again. We will be having a big focus on recognising teen numbers and making sure we say ‘teen’ on the end instead of ‘ty’ (for example 14 ‘fourteen’ instead of 40 ‘forty’). We will also be trying to solve some number sentence problems with counting objects or Numicon. Some of these will be correct and others incorrect.

We have been recapping our digraphs and trigraphs from Phase 3 and will be continuing to do so after half term too. Please ensure you are reinforcing this learning by reading regularly with your child at home.

Reading Challenge Books

Thank you for your support and enthusiasm already with sharing these books with your children. Please make sure you fill in the sheet in the back of your child’s reading record to let us know when you shared the book and who it was that read it. Otherwise it will not be changed. Please ensure these books are in school on Wednesdays. This is our set day for changing Reading Challenge books; the library is not available to us at other times. If you unsure which book is a ‘Reading Challenge’ book, please check the front cover where it has a ‘Rec’ sticker, or check the title on the reading challenge sheet. Thank you.

Upcoming dates to remember:

Monday 5th/Tuesday 6th February – Parent Evenings (reminder slips of your time will be sent out tomorrow)

12th – 16th February – Half term holiday

23rd February – Cinderella dress up day for ‘Take a Tale’ week

Things you could try at home this week:

  • Try making or decorating gingerbread men. You could bake them or make your own out of cardboard.
  • Sign up to ‘Teach your monster to read’ and play some of the games (This website is free to access on a laptop)
  • Sing some number songs or play games involving number.

Have a wonderful weekend.
