Reception Newsletter 16th January 2020
It has been a wet and windy week but the children have been embracing the wild weather! This does mean that sometimes they will come home with dirty uniform; however rest assured that when this happens they have been taking part in active learning, and that school uniform is there to prevent your own clothes from getting messy.
This week we have revisited some of our Phase 3 graphemes. We will be working our way back through all of the Phase 3 graphemes but at a quicker pace, and continuing to assess how much the children can remember to make sure we include certain sounds in our Phase 4 planning. We are starting our Phase 4 teaching and have begun with teaching 2 new tricky word this week, which are little and come.
Next week we will be teaching the tricky words said and have. We will also be teaching how to read CVCC words (consonant, vowel, consonant, consonant) such as tent, damp, paint, pond etc.
This week we have been introducing the story of The Three Little Pigs and learning a story map (a pictorial representation of the story) to help us remember the events. The children have been creating a ‘word bank’ with pictures of key vocabulary needed for our story writing next week (words such as pig, little, sticks, bricks, house, wolf etc).
Next week we will attempt to write our favourite parts of the story. The children will be able to refer to their own word banks for support in writing some of the words.
This week in Maths we have continued to explore number bonds to 5, using a part whole model to represent this. The children have been challenged to find all of the ways to make 5 (the number bonds to 5) and some of them have had extra questions to extend their problem solving.
Next week we will be comparing two sets of numbers using bar charts. The children will be taught how to collect data from their friends and record using blocks. They will be encouraged to talk about the most/least popular outcomes.
Things to try at home this week
- Try out the ‘Three Little Pigs’ home learning challenge which will be in school bags tomorrow (Friday 17th January)
- Practise tricky words with your child. We recommend the tricky word song (click here) which is available on YouTube.
