Reception Newsletter 11th May
Dear Parents and Carers,
This week we have enjoyed exploring ‘The Gruffalo’ story, making masks and acting it out, creating our own story scenes and hunting for the Gruffalo around the school. We spotted him in the woods on Tuesday but think our screaming may have scared him away! We have also enjoyed some messy play with shaving foam and some investigation into floating and sinking in our water tray.
Our Literacy job this week was to write a descriptive sentence about the Gruffalo. We have worked really hard to be as independent as possible and are now learning to extend our sentences by including ‘and’ or telling the reader more (e.g. purple prickles all over his back). We have once again been very impressed with the children’s efforts and are enjoying seeing lots more children choosing to write in their free time.
Next week in Literacy we will be telling the story of ‘Goldilocks’ and thinking about the kind of mischief she would get up to in our houses if she were to sneak in. The children are invited to bring a soft toy in on Friday 19th May for our Teddy Bears Porridge Picnic. This is also class photo day.
In Maths this week we have been doubling and sharing. The children have been using ladybirds to double spots and help them understand the concept of doubling smaller numbers. They have even been writing matching number sentences too. Next week we will be focusing on addition and subtraction with some of our new maths resources! The children will be reading number sentences and demonstrating their understanding.
Things to try at home this week
- Share some traditional fairy tale stories together with your child. You may like to act them out!
- Try testing out some of your household objects/toys in the bath or kitchen sink to see if they float or sink. Discuss the properties of these objects.
Have a fantastic weekend.
