Reception Newsletter 11th January
Reception Newsletter 11.1.18
Happy New Year! We hope you all had a wonderful break – the children certainly seem to have come back refreshed, enthused and eager to learn. They have settled back in really nicely and have been enjoying our new topic so far.
Since returning to school we have continued our Phase 3 phonics learning, beginning with a recap and moving onto more graphemes this week. We have learnt ‘oa’ (in boat), ‘or’ (in fork), ‘air’ (in hair) and ‘igh’ (in night). We have also learnt the following tricky words: ‘you’ and ‘was’. Next week we are learning long and short ‘oo’ (in ‘food’ and ‘foot’), ‘ar’ (in card) and ‘ur’ (in curl) and the tricky words ‘be’ and ‘her’.
We have started our topic by reading the book ‘The Jolly Postman’ and talking about letters to people and addresses. This week we have shared the story of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. The children sequenced story events and have been very keen to try out sentence writing – we have been astounded by their efforts! We also wrote a letter to the Three Bears and took a walk to a nearby post box to send it off. Today we received a reply from the bears and were all very excited!
Next week in Literacy we will share the story of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and focus on descriptive vocabulary to enhance our sentence writing. The children will be drawing a picture of one of the characters and describing them too.
We are also very lucky to be watching M&<M Productions on Wednesday, who will be performing Beauty and the Beast!
This week in Maths we have been focusing on addition. The children have worked hard to use objects and number lines to work out addition problems together.
Next week we will be focusing on subtraction and singing lots of familiar number songs to help us understand and ‘act out’ the problem.
Upcoming dates to remember:
Monday 5th/Tuesday 6th February – Parent Evenings (sign-up sheets available nearer the time)
12th – 16th Febraury – Half term holiday
Things you could try at home this week:
- Try thinking of some descriptive words to describe your family’s features.
- Make some porridge together and try some new toppings!
Have a lovely weekend!
