Reception Newsletter 12th March 2020

23 March 2020Parent Year R

Dear Parents,

It’s been another busy week here at school. The children were inspired by the assembly focused on ‘STEAM’ (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Maths) with the rocket launch following after. Our children have enjoyed creating their own rockets and designs. Please can you bring in any boxes & tubes for our junk modelling area – we are running very low after all the extra creations made this week!

Phonics
This week we have taught the tricky words what and, tomorrow, when. We have also explored how to read and write words beginning with the consonant clusters ‘cr’, ‘sp’, and ‘gr’.
Next week we will continue to work on our consonant clusters, so will be looking at words beginning with ‘pl’, ‘dr’, ‘fr’ and ‘bl’. We will be revising all our tricky words – if your child is confident reading these you could try writing some of these at home, starting with our earlier words ‘to’, ‘I’, ‘the’ and ‘go’.

Literacy
The week we have continued to learn the ‘Supertato’ story, and began writing down parts of it. We have been focused on learning some new vocabulary in our guided reading groups, including ‘scramble’, ‘courage’, ‘assistance’ and ‘mission’. We will spend the next week completing our ‘Supertato’ writing.

Maths
This week in Maths we have revisited our number bonds to 10. We explored these using numicon (twinkl or TES websites are free to access and have numicon cards to print, also number lines) and practised writing down a number sentence to match. Some of us will be supported to use a number line to count on to find out what the second number could be (for example, if they have picked up a 6, we will be counting up from 6 to 10 to find the difference).

Next week we will be focusing on estimating, taking part in some fun games and finding out who has the most/least and exploring what 1 more/less would be. We will attempt to record our scores during our game.

Things to try at home this week

  • Explore your garden/look out of your window and enjoy talking about the seasonal changes you can see around you. Maybe you’ll spot flowers growing, trees budding and birds creating nests. We’d love to hear what you find together!
  • Make some estimates together (we will describe an estimate as a thoughtful, careful guess). How many socks do you think are in the drawer? Can you count them?

    Have a lovely weekend!
    Miss Mabin and Mrs Burkill
